Topstep Review: Rules, Payouts, Real Costs, and Who Should Look Elsewhere

This Topstep review has no affiliate link and no discount code, because Topstep does not run an affiliate programme. SpicyFutures earns nothing if you sign up, which makes it the one review on this site where the numbers cannot be accused of leaning. Topstep is the oldest and most-searched futures prop firm, it pays reliably, and it has two things that decide whether it is right for you: a 55% consistency target that changes your profit target if you have a big day, and a platform rule that shuts out Sierra Chart, NinjaTrader and Tradovate entirely. If that platform rule is the problem, LucidFlex is the closest match: the same $3,000 target and $2,000 drawdown on a 50K, a one-time fee, and 11 platforms including Sierra Chart.

Rules read from 46 articles on Topstep’s help center and stored in our firm data file with each article’s link. Prices are Topstep’s published list prices and have not been re-checked at checkout. SpicyFutures has no commercial relationship with Topstep; the partner firms named in the alternatives section at the end pay us a commission and are marked.

The short answer

Right forSteady day traders on Topstep’s platform

Consistent $150 to $1,000 days, flat by 3:10 PM CT, happy in TopstepX. Topstep’s path to a real live account is the most established in the industry.

Wrong forSierra Chart and Rithmic traders

TopstepX is the only platform. No Sierra Chart, no NinjaTrader, no Tradovate, no Rithmic login. That is not a settings issue; it is the product. Look at LucidFlex instead.

The rule to respect55% best-day target

One day above 55% of your profit target raises the target. A $2,200 day on a 50K means you now need $4,000, and the extra must come on a later day.

The cost people missSubscription plus activation

$49 a month rebilling until you pass, then $149 to activate, then $38 a month if you want depth of market. Or pay $95 a month with no activation fee.

Scorecard

Area Score Why
Payout reliability 5 / 5 Fourteen years, published policy, same-day prop-to-brokerage and instant Aeropay for US traders, uncapped payouts once live
Path to real capital 5 / 5 A genuine Live Funded Account with daily payouts after 30 winning days; most firms never get you off sim
Evaluation rules 3 / 5 One rule and no time limit, but the 55% target raises your goal instead of just delaying you, and the MLL is enforced on unrealized P&L
Funded payout terms 3 / 5 90/10 with a $125 minimum, but five winning days per payout and caps of $2,000 to $5,000 per request on the Express account
Cost 3 / 5 Cheap headline, but monthly rebills, a $149 activation, $38 a month for Level 2, and $599 to $829 to reactivate a lost funded account
Platform choice 1 / 5 TopstepX only. For an order flow trader this is the whole review
Overall 4.0 / 5 The safest firm in the space if you can live inside its platform; the wrong firm if your edge lives in Sierra Chart

What Topstep is

Topstep is a Chicago prop firm founded in 2012, which makes it the oldest futures prop firm still operating and the one most others copied. The programme has three stages. The Trading Combine is a monthly-subscription simulated evaluation. Pass it and you activate an Express Funded Account, a simulated account that pays real money. Trade that consistently and Topstep’s risk team may call you up to a Live Funded Account on the firm’s own capital, with no payout caps. Everything runs on TopstepX, Topstep’s own web and mobile platform.

Pricing and the two paths

Every Trading Combine is sold two ways, and the choice is permanent. The Standard path is cheaper per month and charges $149 once when you pass. The No Activation Fee path costs more per month and charges nothing on passing. Both rebill every 30 days until you pass or cancel, and every rebill adds a reset credit.

Trading Combine list prices, USD per month. Source: Topstep pricing article, read Sep 27, 2026.
Account Standard path Activation on passing No Activation Fee path Reset Profit target Max loss limit Contracts
50K $49 $149 $95 Same as monthly $3,000 $2,000 5 minis / 50 micros
100K $99 $149 $149 Same as monthly $6,000 $3,000 10 / 100
150K $199 $149 $229 Same as monthly $9,000 $4,500 15 / 150

Which path is cheaper depends on how many months you expect to pay. On a 50K, Standard costs $49 a month plus $149 once; No Activation costs $95 a month. Pass in one month and Standard is $198 against $95. Pass in three months and it is $296 against $285. Beyond three months the No Activation path wins, and it also gets $10 to $30 off for adding a daily loss limit at checkout. Topstep’s own referral codes give 15% off a first purchase; they are not an affiliate programme and anyone with a profile can generate one.

The Trading Combine rules

  • One rule. Never let the balance touch the max loss limit. It trails your end-of-day balance up until it reaches your starting balance, then locks, but it is monitored in real time on unrealized profit and loss. An open trade that dips through it is a breach even if it closes above it.
  • Two objectives. Reach the profit target, and keep your best day at or below 55% of it. There is no minimum day count in practice beyond two, and no time limit.
  • The 55% target is not a pass/fail rule; it moves the goalposts. Best day divided by 0.55 becomes your new profit target. On a 50K the recommended ceiling is $1,650 a day. Make $2,200 and your target becomes $4,000. Make it on a day still in progress and every extra dollar that day raises it further, so the fix has to come on a later session.
  • Daily loss limit is optional. $1,000 / $2,000 / $3,000 by size if you add it at checkout, fixed for life, carried into the funded account. Hitting it ends the session, not the account. Adding it at Combine checkout doubles your funded payout caps under a promotion that began June 2026.
  • Breach means reset, not death. Hit the max loss in the Combine and the account is ineligible until you reset, at the monthly price, or with the free credit each rebill gives you. Two resets a day maximum.

Paste a month of daily results into the consistency calculator with the Topstep preset and it will tell you whether your best day would raise your target and by how much.

The Express Funded Account: what changes when you pass

The funded account starts at $0. The 50K label is buying power, not balance. Your max loss limit starts $2,000 below zero, trails up as you earn, locks at $0 once you are $2,000 up, and resets to $0 after any payout. In practice: build a cushion before you request anything, because after the first payout a single bad day can end the account.

You choose one of two payout paths at activation:

Path To request a payout Cap per request, 50K / 100K / 150K With a checkout DLL Split
Standard 5 winning days of $150 or more, plus net profit since the last payout 50% of balance up to $2,000 / $3,000 / $5,000 $4,000 / $6,000 / $10,000 90/10
Consistency 3 trading days, best day at or below 40% of net profit in the window 50% of balance up to $3,000 / $4,000 / $6,000 $6,000 / $8,000 / $12,000 90/10

Minimum payout $125. Traders who joined the current dashboard before January 12, 2026 keep 100% of their first $10,000. After each payout the day count and, on the Consistency path, the ratio reset, and the day you request does not count toward the next cycle. Lose the funded account before your first payout and Back2Funded lets you reactivate it within 30 days for $599 / $699 / $829.

The Live Funded Account

This is the reason to choose Topstep over a firm with easier funded terms. The risk team moves consistent Express traders to a live account trading Topstep’s capital. Payout rules there: five winning days of $150 or more per cycle, request up to 50% of the balance with no dollar cap, an automatic daily loss limit, and after 30 winning days, daily payouts of as much of your unlocked balance as you want. Live traders pay professional data fees. Topstep publishes no figure for how many traders reach live, and it is the risk team’s call, so treat it as a possibility you earn rather than a stage you are owed.

How you get paid

  • Prop-to-brokerage transfer for US traders, same day if requested by 12 PM CT, no fee.
  • Aeropay, US banks, instant after approval, no Topstep fee.
  • Wise for China, Canada and the UK, one to three business days, no Topstep fee.
  • ACH, US banks, one to three days, $30. Wire, international, five to ten days, $30.
  • Internal approval takes one to three business days. A $500 ACH request nets $420 after the split and the fee.

The real cost of trading at Topstep

  • Data. Level 1 is included. Level 2 depth of market, which you need for any DOM or ladder trading, is $38 a month, billed on the 28th, not prorated.
  • Commissions. $1.00 round turn on minis and $0.50 on micros, plus exchange and NFA fees: about $3.78 per ES round turn, $1.22 per MES.
  • Resets. Priced at your monthly rate; one free credit per rebill; credits issued from December 2025 expire after a year.
  • Refunds. A 14-day satisfaction refund of one payment on your first-ever Combine if you have not passed. Otherwise almost nothing is refundable, and Topstep treats chargebacks as prohibited conduct.

TopstepX, and why this review says no to Sierra Chart traders

Topstep withdrew from third-party platforms and runs everything on TopstepX: web, mobile, its own indicators, an API, and a documented Quantower connection for charting. There is no Rithmic or Tradovate login, so Sierra Chart, NinjaTrader, ATAS, Bookmap and Jigsaw cannot be used to trade a Topstep account. If you trade Numbers Bars in Sierra, Topstep is not a candidate however good its payouts are. The Sierra Chart prop firm page lists the nine firms that do connect. Lucid is one of them: its accounts run on Rithmic or CQG and support 11 platforms: Sierra Chart, NinjaTrader, Tradovate, TradingView, Quantower, ATAS, Bookmap, Jigsaw, MotiveWave, R|Trader Pro and TradeSea.

The alternative: LucidFlex

If you came to Topstep for a simple one-step evaluation but trade in Sierra Chart, NinjaTrader or anything else outside TopstepX, LucidFlex is the like-for-like swap. On a 50K the target and drawdown are identical. The differences are the platform, how you pay, and how the funded account pays you.

50K accounts. Topstep from its help center, read Sep 27, 2026. LucidFlex from Lucid’s help center, read Sep 27, 2026; 50K tiers verified Sep 25, 2026.

Path to live capital Live Funded Account by risk-team selection; uncapped, daily payouts after 30 winning days After up to five payouts the account enters Lucid’s live review pool (LucidLive explained)

Where Topstep still wins: a $125 minimum payout against $500, one more mini, and the most established live account in the industry, uncapped once you are there. Where LucidFlex wins: your own platform, no monthly rebill, no activation fee, and no consistency rule once funded, so a big day after you pass does not hold anything up.

First-hand: four of the five Lucid accounts that have paid me were LucidFlex 50K. Across all five, Lucid paid 13 payouts between December 2025 and January 2026, $47,622 gross and $40,729 after splits, approved in under three minutes through Plaid. The dashboard screenshots are on the payout proof page. I trade NQ and ES order flow in Sierra Chart on Rithmic, which is exactly the setup Topstep cannot take.

Hours, products and eligibility

Day trading only. Everything must be flat by 3:10 PM CT, with flattening from 3:08; reopen at 5 PM CT. No forex, no swing trades. Permitted products cover CME equity, FX, metals, energy, rates, agriculture and micro crypto futures. Eligibility follows OFAC and Topstep’s brokers: citizens or residents of 31 countries cannot join, including Turkey, Ukraine, Pakistan, Nigeria and Morocco, and another 25 countries, Germany, Hong Kong and Vietnam among them, can earn Express payouts up to $200,000 lifetime but cannot go live. Canadians trade on a US sub-account and are eligible. The full list is in Topstep’s eligibility article and in our data file.

First-hand

[OWNER: replace after trading a Combine, or delete this section and the rating if you have not. Cover the TopstepX fills versus Sierra on Rithmic, how the 55% target showed on the dashboard, the Level 2 upgrade, and a payout timing if you took one. Until this is filled, the rating above is a paper assessment from the rules alone.]

Verdict

Topstep earns its reputation. The payout policy is published in detail, the money arrives, and the live account is real. Its evaluation is fair if you understand that the 55% target changes your goal rather than failing you, and its funded account is stricter than newer firms: five winning days per payout, caps, and a max loss limit that locks at zero after your first withdrawal. The cost is higher than the $49 headline once activation, Level 2 and rebills are counted. None of that is the deciding factor. The platform is. If TopstepX is fine for how you trade, Topstep is the lowest-risk firm on this site. If you trade order flow in Sierra Chart, it is not available to you. LucidFlex is the closest swap, and the other partners below cover the rest.

If you wanted Topstep for a specific reason, these partners do it

SpicyFutures earns a commission from the firms in this section, and code SPICY applies at each. Topstep itself pays us nothing. Every firm, Topstep included as a non-partner row, is on the comparison table.

Topstep questions

Is Topstep legit?

Yes. It has operated from Chicago since 2012, publishes its payout policy and eligibility rules in detail, offers a real live account, and processes US payouts the same day. It is the reference point most other futures prop firms are measured against.

Does Topstep support Sierra Chart or NinjaTrader?

No. TopstepX is the only trading platform. Quantower can be connected for charting. Sierra Chart, NinjaTrader, Tradovate, ATAS, Bookmap and Jigsaw cannot trade a Topstep account.

What is the best Topstep alternative for Sierra Chart traders?

LucidFlex. Its 50K has the same $3,000 target and $2,000 drawdown as Topstep’s 50K Combine, but it is a one-time fee with no activation fee, it runs on Rithmic or CQG with Sierra Chart supported, and it has no consistency rule once funded. The side-by-side table has every difference.

How does the 55% consistency target work?

Your best day must be at or below 55% of your profit target. If it is higher, the target becomes best day divided by 0.55. A $2,200 day on a $3,000 target makes the target $4,000, and the extra profit must come on a later trading day, not the same session.

How much does Topstep really cost?

On a 50K Standard path: $49 a month until you pass, $149 to activate, $38 a month if you add Level 2, about $3.78 per ES round turn. Pass in month one and the first funded month costs about $236 before commissions. The No Activation path is $95 a month with nothing on passing.

Is there a Topstep discount code?

Topstep runs sales and a referral scheme that gives 15% off a first purchase to anyone using another trader’s referral code. It has no affiliate programme, so SpicyFutures has no Topstep code and none of the links on this page pay us.

What is the difference between the Express Funded Account and the Live Funded Account?

The Express account is simulated, starts at $0, has payout caps and five-day cycles. The Live account trades Topstep’s capital, has no caps, and after 30 winning days pays daily. You reach Live only when Topstep’s risk team selects you.

Disclosure: SpicyFutures has no affiliate or commercial relationship with Topstep and earns nothing from any Topstep link on this page. We earn a commission from the partner firms named in the alternatives section, marked as such, at no extra cost to you.

Risk disclosure: Futures trading involves a substantial risk of loss and is not appropriate for all investors. Topstep’s rules and prices were read from its help center on September 27, 2026 and change without notice; the dashboard governs your account. Nothing here is financial advice.
